what is the formula for percent by mass?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

have you got a specific example to work with, or just the general idea?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a mixture contains 3.64g nacl,2.87g nh4cl,and 4.13g of sio2 what is the percent by mass of each compound in the mixture?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

what's the mass of the whole mixture? 3.64g + 2.87g + 4.13g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10.849

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry typo 1084g

OpenStudy (jfraser):

what fraction of the whole is 3.64g of NaCl out of the whole mixture of 10.64g?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.342

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.336

OpenStudy (jfraser):

which one is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.336

OpenStudy (jfraser):

what did you get as the total mass? because i got 10.64g, not 10.84g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had that but I put the number wrong on my paper and copied it.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

so what's the percent if 3.42g of NaCl is part of 10.64g of total mixture? 34.2% do the others the same way, and all 3 percentages should add up to 100%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks I am doing that now.
