A resident of Missouri has a base income, after exemptions and adjustments, of $ 24,000. The state income tax on this base income is $315 plus 6% of the excess over 9000. What tax is due?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

he needs to play a fixed amount of tax $315 , and : 6% of (24000 - 9000)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

total tax = [ 315 ] + [ 6% of (24000 - 9000) ]

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its..1,215?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

T__T

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait but how did you figure out what formula to set this question up D: ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

; A ; sorry im clueless when it comes to finding which formula to use.. TT__TT

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

very good question :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lets look at below line from the question : The state income tax on this base income is $315 plus 6% of the excess over 9000.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it says, the tax is "315 + something " right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes! i got that!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

sweet :3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the other something is : 6% of the excess over 9000.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

wat that means is, there will not be any tax for first 9000 dollars u earn.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

but, u need to pay 6% tax for anything extra u earn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh really? wow i had no idea it meant that.. omg.. T_T

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so, u need to pay 6% tax on : (24000 - 9000 )

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so when you minus the 24000 - 9000 does that represent... the excess over 9000?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes, im just subtracting 9000 from my income, cuz i dont need to pay tax on that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh i see! that makes sense!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so i just pay tax on the money AFTER subtracting 9000 from my income

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so think careful when u earn more money... u need to pay tax also more ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whenever you see the phrase "excess over 9000" it basically means subtract @_@

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yup!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

"excess over 9000" means : whatever extra remains above 9000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok C: that makese sense~ <333 thank you so so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u are awesome!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since u have earned 24000, the excess over 9000 is : 24000-9000

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

aww.. .no, you're awesome xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mind if i add you? :D as a friend here?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

ive added you :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

<33 :D alright! wicked~ <3 well im going to close this question now C: Thanks once again!!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np... u wlc (:
