OpenStudy (anonymous):

How to name this polyatomic ionic compund? Cu(NO3)2 with the as a subscipt of O and the 2 as a subscript of the bracket.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Cu(NO\(_3\))\(_2\) Cu\(^{2+}\) = copper NO\(_3\)\(^{1-}\) = nitrate Remember that you have: \(\sf \color{blue}{Metal}\)\(\sf \color{red}{(oxidation ~number)}\)\(\sf \color{violet}{Polyatomic~ion}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And depending on the valance state it might be "cupric" [higher valence] or "cuprous" [lower valence]

OpenStudy (abb0t):

cupric and cupprous are more like common names. I don't think IUPAC uses those anymore tho.

Thanks. Sorry. It has been decades since my last chemistry class.
