OpenStudy (adamconner):

Which of the following compounds gives a solution of pH 7 when dissolved? a) Potassium iodide b) Sodium carbonate c) Ammonium nitrate d) Aluminum oxalate

OpenStudy (adamconner):

its not C because NH4NO3 dissociates into NH4+ + NO3-, then in water, NH4+ +H2O=NH3 + H3O+ which is and acid

OpenStudy (adamconner):

or B because that forms a base

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you're good so far. Use the same logic to write dissociation equations for the other compounds and determine which one is not an acid nor a base.

OpenStudy (adamconner):

im not sure how to do aluminum oxalate. is it Al2(c2o4)3. then in water, c2o4- + h2o = HC2o4 + OH-. if thats right then its a base, so the answer is A

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep, thats it.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

good work, dude

OpenStudy (adamconner):

thanks man!
