Thin-Layer Chromatography: Relative Rf values?
Rank them according to expected Rf value (from smallest to largest) observed on a silica TLC plate, developed with a solvent consisting primarily of low dielectric constant solvent. http://tinypic.com/r/oqhfgz/5
So, I'm a bit confused. Will Rf values be higher if the the stationary phase and the substance are the same polarity (because they aren't attracted?) or will it be the opposite because like dissolves like and the more dissimilar substances will be dissolved more readily in the mobile phase?
If you mix two polar substances, they are more likely to be attracted to each other due to intermolecular attractive bonding.
Oh really? Okay. Then the more polar substances will have low Rf values if the stationary phase is polar?
teh least polar compounds will be most attracted to the solvent.
Alright. That makes sense. Thanks a ton dude
