OpenStudy (kainui):

I've got a molecule that I'm having trouble naming.

OpenStudy (kainui):

|dw:1394391406359:dw| So do I choose the aldehyde as the longest chain and then how do I name the substituent?

OpenStudy (kainui):

I'm going to guess2-( (R) 3-hydroxy-3methylcyclopentyl)ethanal

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Are you sure it's (R) ?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Ah, wait we must both be thinking of two different chiral centers.

OpenStudy (kainui):

I was thinking the one where the alcohol is attached but you're thinking where the ring is attached to the aldehyde chain I think.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

actually, i dont remember the rules, BUT, i think you can also name this also as 3-[(R)-1-hydroxy-1-methylcyclopentyl]acetaldehyde?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Hmm, well I'm creating a key for an old Ochem professor I had for a test she's made where it's strictly IUPAC naming. Haha of course, she's made some really difficult ones that I don't remember.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

yes, if it were a benzene ring, it could be treated as a substituent group. I would name the ring.
