The reason why some things dissolve and others do not is because some have ionic bonds while others have non-polar molecules. Water is a polar molecule having one end negatively charged and the other positively charged which interact with ionic bonds in substances such as sugar and table salt. Water molecules surround the charged particles in sugar or salt with oppositly charged ends of the water molecules. The reason why non-polar substances do not dissolve in water is because of the polar nature of the water....
