@jim_thompson5910
can either of you help me?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Do you know how to graph the equation 5x + 7y = 35 ?
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
wouldn't I make it y=-5/7x+5?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
so (0,5) down 5 over 7
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so what is the second point on this graph?
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
5x+7y=-35
so y=-5/7x-5
(0,-5)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
(0,5) is on y=-5/7x+5
what's another point on y=-5/7x+5 ?

OpenStudy (vshiroky):
I don't know
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you said "down 5 over 7"
what did you mean by that?
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
(7,0)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good, you start at (0,5) and go down 5 and over to the right 7 to land on (7,0)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so y=-5/7x+5 has the two points (0,5) and (7,0)

OpenStudy (vshiroky):
yes. That's it? would I have to shade or anything?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
plot those two points, draw a line through them and make this line a dashed line
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
the line is dashed because there is no line under the inequality sign (so we're excluding this boundary)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
no do not shade until the boundaries are set up
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
Ah ok... and shading?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you need both lines drawn
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
What does that mean?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you need to plot both 5x + 7y = 35 and 5x + 7y = -35
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
once you've done that, you can shade the correct region

is that correct?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes it is, hopefully you see how to get that?
OpenStudy (vshiroky):
I think I do. I may post another just to double check I'm doing it right. Thank you!
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you're welcome
