Bronstead Lowry Acid or base? Give Conjugate
Bronstead –Lowry acid or base? Give conjugate. a) HCNO b) OBr- c) HClO3 d) CH3NH3+ e) ClNH2 f) HONH2 Is it: a) Acid, conj. Is CNO- b) Base, conj. Is HOBr c) Acid, conj. Is ClO3- d) Acid , conj. Is CH3NH2 e) Acid, conj. Is ClNH- f) Acid, HOnH-?
I think e is a base.
That is what I was thinking as well. I have not covered these theories on acid/bases very well, I just remember the definition being "acids donate protons, bases accept them". The first a-d look fine to me with that in mind. e and f look like more interesting cases. I'm just doing more research to confirm what I want to say before I give you a wrong idea.
Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated!
In the case of ClNH2, N has a lone pair of electrons which could accept a Hydrogen proton. .. Cl -- N - H \H
Making a ClNH3+, ClNH2 being a base accepting the Hydrogen.
Ok. Man I need to get familiar with drawing those again. I think F is a base too? How can I tell?
It seems to be the same case, actually. Note the ending NH2 again. It looks like this though: . . H - O - N - H \N
oops, \H not \N at the bottom.
Ok. Thanks. I think this is starting to make some sense. I have one more question in the book like this one I need to work.
Thanks!
