Is this equation balanced? 8Fe + S8 --->8FeS Does it show that no atoms are lost or gained in chemical reactions?

thomaster (thomaster):

First, this is a chemistry question. Next time when you have a chemistry question, don't post it in the biology group but in the chemistry group :) Now to the question. An equation is balanced when there are exactly the same number of atoms on both sides of the equation. On the reactant side of this equation (before the arrow), we see 8 iron atoms and 8 sulfur atoms. On the product side (after the arrow), we see 8FeS. You could see that as 8(Fe+S). Both Fe and S are multiplied by 8 so we have the same number of atoms on both sides of the arrow. Thus the equation is balanced.
