OpenStudy (anonymous):

If 55.6 grams of butane reacts with excess oxygen, how many grams of carbon dioxide are produced?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

First, you begin by writing down the chemical equation. This is more commonly known as a \(\sf \color{red}{combustion~reaction}\).

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Combustion follows this: \(\sf \color{blue}{C_nH_m + O_2 \rightarrow CO_2 + H_2O}\), which is essentilly saying, some organic molecule exposed to oxygen and some sort of energy, i.e fire, reacts to form carbon dioxide and water, gas.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Second step is to balance the equation. now, butane has the formula: \(\sf \color{purple}{C_4H_{10}}\)
