What effect does salt have on the melting temperature of ice?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you seen people using salt to melt ice on roads? this is bcos salt lowers the freezing point of ice e.g. normally, water becomes ice at around 0*C but when with salt added, the freezing point may become 2*C and the change in freezing point is related to the ice formation

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It actually interacts with the intermolecular forces between the water molecules, which doesn't allow them to bond nearly as good as they would when no salt is present.
