Doubts:

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Is there an equation for net half life if a particle decays by simultaneous emission of n particles of half life T1,T2,T3....Tn?

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

\(\dfrac{1}{T_{net}}=\dfrac{1}{T_{1}}+\dfrac{1}{T_{2}}+...+\dfrac{1}{T_{n}}\)

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

It is a consequence of the differential equation you will solve.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Actually I got this doubt from the qn I am doing. A radioactive material decays by emission of 2 particles successively with half lives 1620 and 810 respectively. The time in years after which 1/4th remains is ....

OpenStudy (aravindg):

So what do I do after finding Tnet?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Can I just say for 1/2 its Tnet then then 1/4 it takes 2 Tnet?

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

No ! these reaction happen successively, so the half-life is the first one.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

In your qn, you mentioned simultaneous reactions, not successive ones.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

But answer given is 2Tnet

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

If A -> B -> C, amount of remaining A is given by half-life relative to A -> B. The second reaction has absolutely nothing to do with this.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Whereas if A -> B1 AND A -> B2 simultaneously, then Tnet is what I wrote in the first place, and answer will be 2Tnet.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

oh ok thanks!
