Help with a Thesis? So, my topic is Sequoia trees. they're the largest living organisms on the planet, they're rare and cherished, and they might be in danger because of global warming. I can't seem to think of the right thesis statement. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!
Maybe you could tell us more about what you want to write. Do you want to write exclusively on the danger global warming poses to them? For what subject is this? Is it a research paper or informative?
It's a research paper. I don't want it to be focused on the danger of global warming. I just want it to be mentioned in the paper somewhere. The topic is "Giant Sequoias: the world's largest organism"

Not to suggest they aren't valued, but at the end of the day, they're just trees, and as far as research papers go at your level, there isn't anything special about them. You may be better of considering a topic change, unless you've started already, in which case I suggest you keep going.
Better to not waste time already spent on something. Sequoia trees are a perfectly valid topic
Yes, I know trees sound of a boring topic but I'm not the greatest at picking topics and there was an entire documentary on the trees so I thought it'd be pretty easy. But, unfortunately, I have already written the paper. I'm just in need of a thesis.

Giant Sequoias Giant Sequoias are exceedingly large trees which initiates them to consume large amounts of water, at least one ton per day. With the world constantly going and humans endlessly producing more greenhouse gases, how will the Sequoias survive much longer? Greenhouse gases lead to warming of the planet, which can lead to global warming. Something such as global warming would disrupt the amount of water the Sequoia trees get and cause them to perish. Will global warming occur? If so, would it even effect the Sequoias? Of all living organisms on the planet, the Giant Sequoia is the largest. It is, on average, 300ft. tall and weighs nearly 2.7 million pounds, with girths as large as 150 feet. Not only is it the largest living thing, but one of the longest living things with a lifespan of up to 3,000 years. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Giant Sequoias each year. Not only for their astonishing size but also for their rarity. They only occur along the Sierra Nevada Mountains and they are available to visit at Yosemite National Park, where you can also visit the tallest trees ever- the Redwoods. Giant Sequoias have been around for millions of years, but have only been known of for about 200 years. The earliest known discovery was recorded in a journal from 1833 by an expedition of hunters. The journal belonged to an explorer named J.K. Leonard. The first definite sighting, in which was broadly documented, took place in spring of 1852. A hunter was chasing a bear in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, into the woods. The hunter, Augustus T. Dowd, came across the trees and couldn't believe it! When he went back to his camp, no one would believe him until they witnessed it themselves. The trees became well-known and popular to the public. "Giant Sequoia" wasn't the first name given to this vastly large tree. It had been through many names until it earned its permanent one. Albert Kellogg of the California Academy of Sciences received branches from the Sequoias but since there were no flowers or cones, he postponed describing the species until he would have a full collection of plant parts. His plan was to call the tree Washingtonia Gigantea in honor of the first president of the United States. In the meantime, William Lobb had come from England to make a plant collection journey. When he had collected all of the necessary plant parts, he gave a part of the collection to John Lindley, professor of Botany at the University of London. Lindley made an official description of the species. He formally named it Wellingtonia Gigantea in honor of the British duke of Wellington. Sadly but surely, the name was invalid due to Wellingtonia being in use by another plant. The French Joseph Decaisne intervened in 1854 and published the species as Sequoia Gigantea, which eventually won acknowledgment by British botanists. But, to make things even more complicated, Sequoia Gigantea was not a legitimate name as it was also in use by another plant. The issue was resolved by American John T. Buchholz who described Sequoiadendron in 1939. This name originates from genus Sequoia and dendron(δενδρον), the Greek word for 'tree'. In the United States, the tree is known as 'giant redwood', 'giant sequoia', or 'big tree'. In the United Kingdom, besides the names 'giant redwood' or 'giant sequoia', the name 'Wellingtonia' is still used. Now that we understand the significance of the world's largest living organism, we can focus on their endangerment. Many people believe that the Giant Sequoia's existence is in danger because of global warming. Many people also believe that the Sequoia's are perfectly safe. But, just how "safe" are they, exactly? Nate Stephenson, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says that if climate warming continues as predicted, "tens of thousands" of the trees will be at risk in the coming future from destruction by either drought or pathogens brought on by climate. So, will it continue? A study published in the journal Science noted that the mortality of older trees is linked to higher temperatures and drier conditions. Established Sequoias depend upon deep groundwater from the Sierra Nevada snowpack to get through California's extremely dry summers. The opposition is that although annual precipitation doesn't seem to be disappearing, it is in fact arriving in the form of rain rather than snow. This leads to "less snow stored at elevation for springtime melt", says Randall Osterhuber, a hydrologist at the University of California at Berkeley's sierra Nevada snowpack monitoring station. Although, the larger Sequoias have well-developed root systems that are tapped into dependable underground water supplies that will supposedly allow them to handle warming for decades. So, it seems as if some Sequoias are safe and some aren't. What about the entire existence? Is that endangered? Well, their seedlings may be subordinated to long periods of drought, early melting of the snowpack could lead to a breakdown in Sequoias regeneration; seedlings have to make it through the first couple of summers while they bring about a good root system. Or, let's say, if global warming were to bring too much evaporation and too little water, the Sequoia's solar pump would try to suck up water that just isn't there and burn out causing the pumps to burst, and the trees to vanish. So, global warming would affect the lives of Sequoias. But, will it actually occur? the greenhouse effect is a natural process that warm the earth's surface so that life can be assisted. However, too much of a good thing is bad, and too much warming of the lower atmosphere can lead to many other problems. The more heat that is trapped, means the more increased temperatures near earth's surface. Now that it is clear that the greenhouse effect is a major possible cause for global warming, let's take a look at what is a cause for the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas. It naturally occurs, but only at a level that is safe and suitable to life on earth. Human activity, even as little as driving, can significantly increase the levels of carbon dioxide. Nonetheless, an increase in carbon dioxide is not the only problem. Methane increase because of human activity as well. Farming practices, landfills, and the installation of natural gas pipelines all strengthen the amount of methane in the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases are also greenhouse gases that are a danger for global warming. Moreover, the use of manufacturing techniques release chlorofluorocarbons into the air. Subsequently, human activity is the main distributor for the greenhouse effect and, in a sense, global warming. In fact, ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate- warming trends over the past century are caused by human activities, and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. Unfortunately, greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect are necessary for life.
