A high school student working part-time as a lifeguard had a gross income of $6596 last year. If his federal tax rate was 10% and his state tax rate was 4.15%, what was the amount withheld from his pay last year in federal tax, state tax, and FICA combined?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Not a good question. Withholding is only vaguely tied to the actual tax liability. If we assume that his withholding is exactly tuned to his actual tax liability, then it is the same question as "What was the federal, state, and combined tax for the year?" Also, it is often the case that State Taxes are not subject to Federal Taxes. Is that the case on this one? MUST have better information.
