Can someone check my answer?? Which of the following systems reflects a decrease in entropy? burning match freezing water evaporating alcohol <----------------- breaking glass

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whpalmer4 please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hoblos

OpenStudy (hoblos):

as much as i know is that entropy roughly means that something becomes more chaotic, less ordered; it means entropy increases when something goes from compact to spread out thus it is minimum at solid state, more at liquid state, and maximum at gaseous state

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so maybe the evaporation makes it much more ordered?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean more disordered

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk...this is confusing

OpenStudy (hoblos):

yeah, more disordered means less ordered, which means an increase in entropy

OpenStudy (hoblos):

you have to find the case where the substance is transformed to more ordered

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe the water one...thats the only one that seems a little bit different

OpenStudy (hoblos):

yeah it is the water freeze, when water freezes it is changed from liquid state (more entropy) to solid state ( less entropy) thus we have a decrease in entropy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, I am reading some more on it and that makes sense :) thanks for helping me clarify :) Do you have time to help me review other q's or not really?

OpenStudy (hoblos):

yeah of coarse tag me on the question you ask and I'll try to help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)

OpenStudy (hoblos):

any time :)
