Let f(x) = x2 - 16. Find f-1(x). 4square root of x ±square root of x plus 16 x squared over 16 1 over quantity of x squared minus 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mean f^(-1)x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

naw what i put is what it sayes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To find the inverse: Replace f(x) with y Switch x's and y's, so put x where y is and x where y is. Solve for y Replace y with f^-1(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it say\[f^{-1}x\] ? If so you are looking for the inverse which is ±square root of x plus 16 iambatman covered how you get there

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

One nifty feature about the inverse functions is that you can construct them graphically. Here's a plot of \(y = x^2-16\) (in blue). The green line is \(y = x\). The other parabola drawn in purple and olive is \(y = \pm \sqrt{x+16}\) and as you can see, is the original parabola reflected across the line \(y=x\)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

the notation f^-1(x) implies that the inverse relation is a function, it is not this question makes no sense.
