Fe in elemental state is zero, and loses 2 e- to go to Fe^2+, loss of electrons or increase in oxidation no. is oxidation, so Fe is getting oxidized Cu goes from +2 to zero oxidation no. in elemental state by gaining those 2 e-, gain of electrons is reduction, so copper is getting reduced. Now comes the confusing part for most, the substance that gets reduced is the OXIDIZING AGENT, so Cu is the oxidizing agent the substance that gets oxidized is the REDUCING AGENT, so Fe is the reudcing agent
