Waste water from certain industrial chemical processes contains aqueous Hg 2 2+ {{\rm Hg}_{2}}^{2+} ions. Since the mercury ion is toxic, it is removed from the waste water by reaction with aqueous sodium sulfide. The products of the reaction are solid mercury( I ) sulfide and aqueous sodium ions.
