Compound-Complex? What is the structure of the sentence? The dog wagged its tail and barked when I opened the door. A. compound-complex B. compound C. complex D. simple
help
I think it's C.
This may help: Simple sentence: contains 1 independent clause Compound sentence: contains 2 or more independent clauses Complex sentence: contains 1 independent and 1 or more dependent clauses Compound-complex sentence: 2 or more independent and 1 or more dependent clauses I think you're right :)
"The dog wagged it's tail" is independent. "Barked when I opened the door" is dependent.
"and barked when I opened the door" is dependent, so in that case it WOULD be C. But "I opened the door" is independent, so that would make it compound-complex. How do you know which one to use? @LovelyAnna
Aha... I see where your at, but split up sentence should have a subject and verb. "and barked when" isn't complete. Dependent clauses aren't complete but still contain a subject and verb, right?
Hmmm. I don't know. If it contained a subject and a verb, I thought it would be independent. "The dog barked." "The girl sings." "He drinks." Those all have subjects and verbs but are independent, correct? So I assumed "and barked" was dependent, because the sentence could stop there: "The dog wagged its tail and barked." but it continues with a following independent clause: "I opened the door." So I thought it was 2 independent and 1 dependent. This is so confusing x)
Lol, ikr? It's a bit tricky, but we'll figure it out. "The dog wagged it's tail and barked" would be independent, but if I remember correctly, that's not how I studied this stuff. A sentence had to be broken up into smaller sentences, so "The dog wagged it's tail and barked" wouldn't really work together even though it makes sense.
First, cross out the ones we think are wrong. So B and D aren't correct
Yes, it's definitely A or C. Sorry we are taking so long @CrazyCountryGirl hahaha
@CrazyCountryGirl help us XD You've taken this stuff in school, haven't you? :P
@foreverjennnicole do you think "and barked when I opened the door." is dependent? I mean the sentence could be broken into two sentences cause there is "and" between them.
I think it would be. I'm thinking you're right. I looked up example sentences of each to try to understand better: Compound-complex sentences: "Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with." "We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought that we were wrong." Complex sentences: "The woman who called my mom sells cosmetics." "The book that Jonathan read is on the shelf." "The house which Abraham Lincoln was born in is still standing." From that, I think complex does fit it better. I still don't completely understand but I will agree with you x) So @CrazyCountryGirl, go with C and let us know if it was right!
Lol, I still hope I'm right :P That was some problem! xD Good luck @CrazyCountryGirl
