the attraction forces between neighboring dipoles are know as
Dipoles of what exactly? Between molecules, atoms?
Well, I do believe that it is dipole-dipole interactions.
If they are talking about intermolecular attractions, pretty sure its Dipole-Dipole force.
Not too sure what dipoles mean by itself though... e
Dipoles are the result of unequal sharing of electrons in a molecule. Dipoles are polarized towards the more electronegative atom in the molecule.
Dipole itself implies two poles, one positive and one negative.
@halorazer So dipole dipole force relies on what? The structure of the atom? I know H2O has Dipole Dipole force since it is polarized, but what other examples can I see?
|dw:1397449934175:dw| As you can see here, H2O is the dipole because it is polar. The negative parts of the first H2O molecule (the O is negative because it attracts more electrons, which means it has a higher electronegativity) attract to the positive parts (the two hydrogens) of the other polar molecule. So dipole dipole interactions depend on whether or not the molecule is polar. If there are two molecules and they are both polar, then dipole forces can occur because in both molecules there is a positive and negative end, and opposite charges attract. Other examples of dipole dipole interactions? Hydrochloric acid (HCl) has dipole dipole forces. So does HBr, H2O, SO2, NF3, etc.
