Write an equation of a line parallel to y = 2 over 3x −5 in slope-intercept form that passes through the point (−6, −1).
y= 2 over 3x + 3
y= 2 over 3x − 6
y= −3x − 1
y= 3x + 6

Can anyone help, I've tried for a half hour on this problem but can't come up with an answer.

Ok, first, can you show me the formula for slope-intercept form?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y = mx + b
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
ok good, :) I swear it will not be that difficult, just stick with me alright?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
So we have:\[y=\frac{2}{3x}-5\]Is that correct?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I will, sorry if I don't reply immediately. I keep having to refresh page after I reply

Yes
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
Alright and that x is on the bottom?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
or is it like this: \[y=\frac{2}{3}x-5\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Second one haha.
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
alright lots easier then =)

So first, what is the slope of our line?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2/3?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yep
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
so now, if two lines are parallel their slopes are the ________.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
slopes are equal

so that eliminates the last 2 options?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
good good
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
now, can you tell me point-slope form?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
uh idk, I haven't looked at them haha
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y – y1 = m(x – x1)

alright, so can you input what we have into that?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Annoying have to refresh page everytime after I post
Umm.. I'm not quite sure. Let me thinkkk
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
ok what is m?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2/3
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
good, \(y_1?\)

That's where im stuck at. Guessing 5?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
What is the point you were given for your new line?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
(-6,-1) so y1 = -1?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yeppers
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
and x_1?

-6
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yep so now, put those values in
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
and Watch your signs
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y - (-1) = 2/3(-5 - (-6))
I think that's right, x = -5?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
nope x=x

but other than that excellent, I'm really happy you kept your parentheses
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
So now, just solve for y and simplify the right side
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y=1/3(2x+9)
I keep getting this?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
can you show me each step?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Sorry had to restart wifi

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
it's cool
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y - (-1) = 2/3(x - (-6))
Ok so that looks like that.
y + 1 = 2/3 (x+6)
y + 1 = 2/3x + 4
y = 2/3x + 4 -1
Is this good so far?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yes, and you have one step and you are finished
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
literally 1 step. The smallest easiest step ever
OpenStudy (anonymous):
y = 2/3x + 5

wait, what is 4-1?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
well crap
so it'll be y = 2/3x +3
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yuppers
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
You did it all yourself :) just a little guidance. Good work =)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thanks so much man! I mostly understand all this again, just needed some refreshment.

np, and trust me refreshment is necessity. That is why I am on here. I haven't used real numbers in a class in like 4 years lol
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yea I agree. Especially with this type of stuff, hasn't been that long since I last used it but the concept was already escaping me :p. Thanks again!
