What might happen if you mix a strong acid with a strong base? A.an explosion B.acid will destroy the base C.the base will destroy the acid D.The resulting substance would have a neutral pH of 7

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

what do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Well read the definitions I gave you. What happens when you react, -OH + +H

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Remember A bronsted acid gives off protons (hydrogens with no electrons) and bases give off Hydroxide (-OH)

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Make a guess?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

I will tell you the answer either way

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

-OH + +H -> H2O and what is the pH of water?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

When ever you react an acid with a base you get water and a salt example NaOH + HCl -> H2O + NaCl etc

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Remember 7 is neutral pH This stuff may seem kind of dull or confusing to you but just remember you are manipulating the stuff everything is made of, chemistry is amazing and these fundamental concepts may seem abstract and useless to you now but knowing them can actually improve your appreciation of life

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

They are also needed if you ever want to go into the sciences or engineering

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Oh btw the definition of a strong acid and base is one that dissociates completely in solution, NaOH dissociates completely into +Na + -OH ions in solution (water)

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

KL-RC dont give answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lmao!!!!!! LOL

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Unless you are going to explain it in a way that they can see how the answer is obtained

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sir I think everything went on top her head xD

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Well if someone else goes to this question instead of reading and actually learning they will just scroll down see D and leave without learning why

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

It devalues my time and it cheats that person out of actually learning something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok ok I'm deleting me answer xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think the main thing she need's to know is that Ph level depends on the concentration of OH- and H+ ions that's the first thing about PH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the way you recognize which compound is a base by looking if it has a hydroxide to ot like NaOH (sodium Hydroxide) or Zinc hydroxide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Although don't confuse it with Alcohols those OH(s) are NOT the same as a metal hydroxides, just to keep it in mind :)
