Radioactive phosphorus in bacteriophage was found in the bacterial cells show that it's DNA that's hereditary genetic material because phosphorus is needed to form the phosphate sugar of nucleotides (which are the building blocks of DNA). Radioactive sulphur was not found in the bacteria and sulphur is not found in nucleotides but proteins (amino acids such as methionine and cysteine contain sulphur). Hope this helps

@aarong, the Hershey-Chase experiment was one conducted to investigate if DNA or proteins were the hereditary materials using the bacteiophage and bacteria. Two groups of bacteriophages were used, one with radioactive sulphur (tags the proteins) and another with radioactive phosphorus (tagst DNA). After infection by bacteriophage, the bacteriophage-bacteria association was broken by applying centrifugal force. Only radioactive phosphorus was found in the bacteria and radioactive sulphur was found in the supernatant, thus proving that DNA managed to enter the bacteria and it's the genetic material that is inherited by bacteriophages that would be synthesised in the bacteria
