Well, in geometry we need to have some information when we prove something, it's like when you discuss with your friends about anything. You pretty much have a starting point and you derive into something using things you know. Same goes to geometry, we start out with what we know, and derive into something (also called "theorem") using things that are already proven and our starting point. So, in order to prove a relationship between vertical angles, we need to have vertical angles, let's do a diagram: |dw:1398958556583:dw| in the drawing we know only one thing. "<1 is vertical angle with <3"

So, now we have to prove a relationship between 1 and 3. Let's begin, we know one thing, "Linear angles sum 180º" wich is true because for example, <4 and <3 actually form a straight line, let's use that: \[m <1 + m <2 =180º\] \[m<3 + m<2 = 180º\] Since they are both equal to 180º, we can make them equal, like this: \[m <1 + m <2 = m < 3 + m<2\] if I sustract "m<2" to both sides it looks like this: \[m<1=m<3\] and that proves it. So we have found that if we have a pair of vertical angles, they will have the same measure.

sure, a two column proof is where we write the statments on the right side, and reasons on the other. Statement for example "My computer is faster than davids" and a reason would be "My computer has more recent hardware". Pretty bad example, but it's the main idea, you give your statement, and then you justify it.
