WILL FAN AND GIVE A MEDAL!!!!! How do protons, neutrons, and electrons determine the properties of an atom?
protons determine the TYPE of atom, the atomic number refers to the number of protons. Protons carry a positive charge and thus also are one determinite in the charge of the atom. Neutrons help determine the isotope type. Atoms will have a varying molecular weight based on how many neutrons are present, they also have slightly different physical/chemical properties (think carbon-14 dating). Neutrons and protons have roughly the same mass. Electrons Have almost no mass but have an equal and opposite charge to protons. They do not exist in the nucleus of the atom but instead are a variable, transient probability cloud in a shell outside the atom nucleus. Electrons determine what ion the atom is. This effects the charge and bonding tendencies of the atom.
thank SO much.... both of u, u both r lifesavers!!!! lolz
