the oxidation number for each atom in Al2(SO4)3 is

Assign -2 for oxygen. The sulfate ion carries a charge of -2, so the sum of the oxidation numbers of the sulfur and oxygen in the sulfate ion have to add up to -2. That will enable you to find the oxidation number for sulfur. The sum of all oxidation numbers in the compound is zero, so once you figure out the oxidation number for three sulfate ions, you can then determine the oxidation number for the aluminum. Check to see that the sum of all of the oxidation numbers is equal to zero.
