What could be a possible value for x?
A.
3.5
B.
4.0
C.
4.5
D.
5.5
OpenStudy (twopointinfinity):
if you switch the L and the O in mathslover's name it says mathsolver.
mathslover (mathslover):
Let us first consider two triangles : ABZ and BCZ
In Triangle ABZ :
AB + AZ > BZ
So, 8.8 + 4.79 > BZ
=> 13.59 > BZ
Now, in Triangle BCZ :
BC + CZ > BZ
4.79 + (2x+1) > BZ
or 5.79 + 2x > BZ
Now, as BZ is smaller than 13.59 ... So, 5.79 + 2x should also be greater than 13.59 so that BCZ triangle is possible.
mathslover (mathslover):
5.79 + 2x > 13.59
2x > 7.8
or x > 3.9

@RobertoTB - Sorry brother, we're not here to just give out answers. We're here to help you with your problem and make you understand the basic concepts.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so give the equation so i can solve it
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so what do i do with 3.9
mathslover (mathslover):
See, x has to be greater than 3.9 in order to have the figure possible.
mathslover (mathslover):
What can you conclude from the above point? Which option do you think will not be suitable for "x" ?

2x+1>3.9 like that
mathslover (mathslover):
Oh oka, wait.
mathslover (mathslover):
*okay
mathslover (mathslover):
I think, I did a mistake there.

@RobertoTB - solve for x in :
2x + 1 < 8.8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3.9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so its B
mathslover (mathslover):
x < 3.9 means : x should be lesser than 3.9
Which option do you think, is lesser than 3.9 ?
