an electric immersion heater has a power rating of 1500 W. If the heater is placed in a liter of water @ a room temperature, how many minutes will it take to bring water to a boil? (assume that there is no heat loss)

The heating rate is 1400 W = 1500 J/s Room temperature is about 25 oC. Amount of heat needed will be specific heat of water [J/kg-oC] times mass of water [kg] times (100-25). Time will be amount of heat divided by rate of heating.
