which of the following have the weakest London forces a)C2H6 b)C3H8 c)C4H10 d)C5H12 why?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Larger and heavier atoms and molecules exhibit stronger dispersion forces than smaller and lighter ones. In a larger atom or molecule, the valence electrons are, on average, farther from the nuclei than in a smaller atom or molecule. They are less tightly held and can more easily form temporary dipoles. The ease with which the electron distribution around an atom or molecule can be distorted is called the polarizability.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

So what you are going to do is you have to add all the molecules together to get the mass of each compound and the lightest compound will have the weakest force, because look at what I posted above. Let me know if you have other questions about this question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, the answer is a)?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Correct, because the heavier the mass is, the strongest force it is. :) Close the thread once you are done.

oh, i see. thanks^^
