Which combination will make a buffer? A. NaOH and NaCl B. KOH and KCl C. HCl and NaCl D. CH3COOH and CH3COONa

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

well what is a buffer?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Buffer is made from a weak acid or base combined, right? so.... we need know what our strong acids and bases are from memorization.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would it be C since its an acid and a base?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Can not be A because, No, NaOH is a strong base and NaCl is the salt of a strong acid and a strong Can not be B because, KCl is a strong base vs a weak acid. It can not be C because, HCl is a strong acid and NaOH is a strong base; their salt, NaCl, therefore has no buffering ability. So we are left with: D. CH3COOH and CH3COONa is the correct answer You are going to need to memorize the strong acids/strong bases.

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@aaggaa Close, but D is correct answer :P Good effort.
