Question attack!! 3 teeny tiny questions concerning isomers, bond angle and shape helppp please!!
isotope question
I'm on it! =P
yaaaaaay!! :D @Kainui
PH3 angle question
and finally shape question the most unclear to me one
Alright so first one, how do you think you could figure it out? Here are two possibilities. See if you can draw all 9 out. |dw:1401176940451:dw|
hmmm ok let me try
For PH3 what you have to know is how many electrons does Phosphor have in its orbitals by looking at the periodic table so that you can draw its lewis dot structure. The last one which is planar is also drawing lewis dot structures.
i can come up with this much only
Replace more hydrogens!
okay in PH3 P has 5 electrons in its last shell and 3 of them are involved in bonding with H so it has 1 lone pair thus i'd expect the angle to be 107
oh can do that??? like replace all H?? i didn't know that >_<
Yeah, the reason it's 107 is simply because if it was a perfectly even bond between each atom like in methane the angle would be 109.5. The lone electron pair takes up a lot of volume since it's not tied up in bonding to another atom and repels the other bonds away causing them to be squeezed together to have a slightly smaller angle.
yes exactly! but why the answer is 104? thats why i got confused T_T
i mean wasnt 104 for 2 lone pairs?
i could come up with 8 only, i'll try finding one more
ummmmm Just a little question what do you mean by Planar?
got all 9 yaaay!!
Awesome. =)
Draw out the structure of PH3 and I'll show you what's going on with it.
okaaay sec
here
So that's one way of drawing it, but can you draw it with the bond lines as a 3D structure like this? |dw:1401178604634:dw|
