According to Boyle’s Law, if the volume of a sample of O2 gas is doubled while the temperature is held constant, what happens to the pressure? a) It doubles. b) It decreases by ½. c) It remains constant.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hello @FreyaBeauchamp !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

U know the equation PV=nRT ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah i do

OpenStudy (abhisar):

that's good.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now let us see what happens if we keep the Temperature constant

OpenStudy (abhisar):

In this case P will become inversely proportion to V

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So does that mean that the pressure remains constant?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No..no..only (R), T & n will be constant

OpenStudy (abhisar):

P will vary inversely to V

OpenStudy (abhisar):

so if u double the volume then pressure will get halved

OpenStudy (abhisar):

are u getting ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the pressure doubles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so if it gets halved then it It decreases by ½ right?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

if volume gets halved then pressure gets doubled, if volume gets doubled then pressure gets halved

OpenStudy (abhisar):

got it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, thanks for explaining :) Just to make sure, so the answer is a) It doubles right?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No u still didnt got the logic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand..

OpenStudy (abhisar):

read the last line i wrote

OpenStudy (abhisar):

read ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so you said if volume gets doubled then pressure gets halved and in the problem The volume does get doubled so that means the pressure gets halved. So does that mean the pressure will decrease by ½?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Bingo !!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

U r awesome !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you but you helped me so much! Thank you again :)
