HELP!!! Galactosemia is an autosomal recessive human disorder that affects 1/250,000 individuals in Sweden. Individuals with galactosemia have genotype “gg”. What is the frequency of the recessive allele in this population? Answer 0.0002 0.02 0.002 0.99 I don't know I got a weird number I did 2/500,000 help!

please help @Abhisar

OpenStudy (abhisar):

LOL..what happened ? r u in a test ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no I need it done by tonight.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

all ryt..give me a minute then

OpenStudy (abhisar):

A is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

show me the math behind it?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

since it is a recessive disease...the genotype of the affected person will be (gg)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now the frequency of disease i.e of gg is given 1/250,000

OpenStudy (abhisar):

u need to calculate frequency of g

OpenStudy (abhisar):

it will be \[\sqrt{1/250,000}\]

OpenStudy (abhisar):

The answer i gave u is wrong !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is it???

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I cant say that..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it C?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I dont know....i think the question provides insufficient informations !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It does not, trust me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since it is a reccesive allele we use "2" instead of "1" because 2 alleles contribute to the reseccive like, and divide that by 500,000 because of allele frequency and sqaure root it..... figured it out.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

what about the people who have genotypes Gg..have u included them in ur calculation ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@alphadxg

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

Since it is recessive, then it wouldn't matter the disorder is only present when gg appears, since gg has two allels then you use 2/2500 square root that. = .002

OpenStudy (abhisar):

ohkay here we have to find the frequency of allele g...what about g in Gg ?

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

@Abhisar answered it already :) http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/538aa805e4b02fec90351442

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No m asking different hink...u hav to calculate the frequency of allele g in this question..so u will hav to include the g in Gg also

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@alphadxg

OpenStudy (alphadxg):

What is the frequency of the "recessive allele" in this population? It's not asking us for heterozygotes.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes but recessive allele is g and it is also in Gg

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@alphadxg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@alphadxg is right, submitted my test and it was right answer. thanks boys @abhisar
