How do people question the meaning and purpose in life?

OpenStudy (kenljw):

I took a program called "est" in 1974 in San Francisco Ca, it consisted of to long weekends and Wednesdays. In it I remember the "trainer" saying "If everything is created from nothing than everything is nothing". This is a position some live by when they say anything and everything goes. In the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, you'll find that the first thing the Hebrews did when capturing women and children was to pare their nails, this was the first step in indoctrinating them into their culture. Their culture, society, centered about one deity which they called God and occasionally Father, they had a deep moral system that adhered their citizens together with hope for the future. When Christ came about, as prophesied, it was recognized that the world was definitely changing and Christ was to take the place of the Temple in Jerusalem in an Eternal, being with the Father, way. Since then Christian has had the "hope" with God the Father and Christ the Son for a "good" future, living the best they could. I met a felon that was overly bodily clean and asked him why don't he clean inside, his response was if I only could. I informed him to clean the inside one must accept an outward standard for correction and suggested he use the Bible, which he read in prison but considered no one followed anymore. Paring ones nails, outward cleanliness, is only the first step in creating a world where one can develop any meaning and purpose in life, which requires a moral code to live by and possibly die by. If you live for nothing you essentially have nothing.

How do you question it? are you referring to the thought process or...?

OpenStudy (kenljw):

It depends on what you choose to be your meaning. I met a man once who choose his marriage and family as meaning, they had many hard times together but endured. The same with my parents which had problems in family and society, they endured but had mixed emotions about each other. When a person has meaning/purpose and loses faith in it they may totally collapse because it was their whole world. In Judaic Christian Religion, if one has truly found it, a personal center I created and if one follows all the tenets it becomes unshakable come hell or high water. Notice I said personal center not faith in the world or other people, such as original core family, later spouse, children and friends or even church, because inevitably they may let us down. Your question is how do you find your meaning/purpose, will that's up to the individual, we are all somewhat different, but as the scripture say's seek and yea shall find, and hopefully follow it all your life. One tenet in the Old and New Testament is do not vow, swear, promise, commit, pledge, forswear for good or evil because one never knows what their life may bring. When one does these things their trying to control their own life and the ones around, essentially their trying to be God.
