Which chlorine compound has bonding that can be described as ionic with some covalent character? 1. NaCl 2. MgCl2 3. AlCl3 4. SiCl4

OpenStudy (abmon98):

B Magnesium chloride does have a degree of covalent character due to the polarising ability of the doubly charged magnesium ion.

OpenStudy (abmon98):

small cations of high charge have a high charge density and this may be able to distort the electron cloud around the anion so that there is some degree of electron sharing between magnesium and chlorine atoms

Oh, thank you. That was helpful. :D

OpenStudy (abmon98):

your most welcome :)
