In the diagram, DC is tangent to the circle, AC=12cm , and BD=2sqrt(34cm). Find AD

OpenStudy (mikurout):

Nearly 16 cm.

@mikurout - Giving out answers is not allowed on OpenStudy. For more details , refer to OpenStudy's Privacy Policy and Code of Conduct! @ltp1212 - You're given with BD = \(2\sqrt{34}\) and AC (diameter) = 12 cm Since, radius is the half of diameter : So, radius ( BC ) = AC / 2 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathslover BC=6

mathslover (mathslover):

yes, right. Now, in Triangle BCD, you have : BC = 6 and BD = \(2\sqrt{34}\) Use pythagoras theorem to find CD .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i simplify BD to 11.66?

mathslover (mathslover):

No.. When you will square it , the square root will automatically be removed : Base ^2 + perpendicular ^2 = hypotenuse^2 Here you have base = CD Perpendicular = BC and Hypotenuse = BD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^{2}+6^2=136\] \[x^2+36=136\] \[x^2=100\] \[x=10\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathslover thanks my answer is 10cm

mathslover (mathslover):

Perfect work. Its right. @ltp1212

OpenStudy (mikurout):

@ltp1212 But You have asked to find out AD .
