OpenStudy (anonymous):

the total number of neutrons in a diatomic oxygen molecule which is made up of one atom of o-16 and atom of o-18

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Thats not entirely correct, the mass of the protons is included in the mass number. For example, all oxygen atoms have 8 protons, O-16 has 8 protons and 8 neutrons adding these up gives you 16. Likewise, O-18 has 8 protons and 10 neutrons, 8+10=18

OpenStudy (jfraser):

No. Oxygen-16 doesn't have 16 neutrons, it has a mass of 16, made up of BOTH protons and neutrons. There are 8 protons in every oxygen atom, so in oxygen-16 there are also 8 neutrons because 8+ 8 =16. In oxygen-18, there are STILL 8 protons, but now 10 neutrons

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Oh, yes, .-. How did I overlook that. I'm losing it. </3
