OpenStudy (lena772):

Which of the following is a possible set of quantum numbers for an electron? (1, 0, 0, +1) (2, 2, 1, +½) (4, -3, 0, -½) (3, 2, 1, -½)

OpenStudy (lena772):

I think it's A or D

OpenStudy (kainui):

Electrons can only have one type of spin, + or - 1/2.

OpenStudy (lena772):

So it's D?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yep, assuming your reasoning behind eliminating B and C is sound.

OpenStudy (lena772):

Well isn't it n, n-1,

OpenStudy (lena772):

2-1 isn't 2, and 4-1 isn't -3

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yeah, the second value is wrong for both B and C cause you can't have it be the same as your principal quantum number or be negative. You can have a negative orbital angular momentum or electron spin though, since that's just a direction rather than referring to energy which is positive or a shape, s,p,d or f.
