"ROUND TRIP"An airplane flying at constant air speed, due east, from My City to Your City, in calm weather (no wind of any kind) would log the same flying time for both legs of the trip. Suppose the same trip is taken when there is wind from the west. How would the total (round trip) time in windy weather compare with the total time in calm weather? Please answer this in words, not equations, briefly explaining how you obtained your answer.

Thanks
Suppose u r going to school with a speed of 10m/s. After the school is over u come back to home again with a speed of 10m/s. suppose ur school is 10 m from ur home. Can u tell me the time it take for the round trip ?
2 s?
yes that's ryt !
Now suppose while going u stepped up ur velocity by 2 m/s and while coming back u stepped down ur velocity by 2 m/s. Now can u find the total time taken in the round trip ?
*Now suppose while going to school u stepped up........
10s?
Now u will go with a speed of 12m/s and come with a speed of 8m/s
so calculate the time taken in the round trip. It will not be 10s
I have no idea
ohkay...how much time it will take to reach the school ??
if the school is 10m apart and u r marching ahead with a speed of 12 m/s. Time = distance/speed
?????
I'm still confused. How would you calculate it
10/12 = 0.833s
got it ?
oh yes
now this was only first leg of the journey. Now while returning ur speed is 8 m/s and again u have to travel 10m so u would take 10/8 = 1.25 s
now for the total journey or round way trip u will take 1.25 + 0.833 = 2.083\(\approx\)2 s
got upto this ?
Yes
what will u conclude with this ?
Total time taken to cover a distance is not effected if the speed in first leg is increased by some amount and then decreased by same amount in the second leg. do u get me ?
??
yes
Now lets see what's happening with our airplane !
The plane is flying towards the east and even the wind is from west to east. This will increase it's speed with a certain amount. Now while returning the plane is flying towards the west but the wind is still towards the east. This will decrease the speed of plane with that same amount.
Now as we discussed above, no change in time period will be observed, the plane will take same time as it took in calm weather !
got it ?
Yes, thank you so much
