Determine the molar mass of the ionic compound sodium hydroxide. 24.0g 32.0g 40.0g 48.0g

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

@iPwnBunnies

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Hydroxide is the polyatomic ion (OH) and it has an ion charge of -1. Sodium, Na, has a +1 ion charge in ionic compound. So, the molecular formula for sodium hydroxide is NaOH. One mole of NaOH with have one mole of sodium, oxygen, and hydrogen. You can find the molar masses of elements on the Periodic Table. :3

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

Na-22.89 O-16.00 H-1.008

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Mhm. One mole of nitrogen atoms weighs 22.89 grams. One mole of O weights 16 grams. Hydrogen, 1 gram. Since one mole of NaOH contains of mole of all of these elements, the molar mass of NaOH will be 22.89 + 16 + 1 = roughly 50 grams/mol

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

Wait is molar mass the same thing as atomic weight?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Numerically, it's the same. So, like oxygen for example. One atom of oxygen equals 16 amu or Daltons. One mole of oxygen equals 16 grams.

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

And so it'd be d

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Mhm.
