Can bacillus subtilis ferment lactose or glucose?

\(\bigstar\) Bacillus subtilis, known also as the hay bacillus or grass bacillus, is a Gram-positive, catalase-positive bacterium. A member of the genus Bacillus, B. subtilis is rod-shaped, and has the ability to form a tough, protective endospore, allowing the organism to tolerate extreme environmental conditions. \(\bigstar\) These species is commonly found in soil, but recent evidence suggests that B. subtilis is a normal gut commensal in humans. \(\bigstar\) B. subtilis is only known to cause disease in severely immunocompromised patients, and can conversely be used as a \(\bf probiotic\) in healthy individuals. \(\bigstar\) Bacillus subtilis grows in the absence of oxygen using nitrate ammonification and various fermentation processes. Lactate, acetate, and 2,3-butanediol were identified in the growth medium as the major anaerobic fermentation products.

\(\huge\bigstar\) Lactic acid is the product of lactose fermentation & In solution, it can lose a proton from the carboxyl group, producing the lactate ion
err.. i did an experiment, Kliger's iron agar slant.. i've searched the internet.. some say they do not undergo fermentation.. but my results shows that there are changes in color of the agar (red to reddish orange)

\(Sure..\) Let Us take two samples Kligler's iron agar and TSI ( Triple Sugar Iron Agar)... \(alright~?\) TSI is similar to Kligler's iron agar, except that Kligler's iron agar contains only two carbohydrates: glucose (0.1%) and lactose (1%). Besides the carbohydrates mentioned, the medium also contains beef extract, yeast extract, and peptones which are the sources of nitrogen, vitamins and minerals. Phenol red is the pH indicator, and agar is used to solidify the medium. During preparation, tubes containing molten agar are angled. The slant of the medium is aerobic, while the deep (or butt) is anaerobic. When any of the carbohydrates are fermented, the drop in pH will cause the medium to change from \(reddish-orange\) (the original color) to yellow. A deep red color indicates alkalization of the peptones. Sodium thiosulfate in the medium is reduced by some bacteria to hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a colorless gas. The hydrogen sulfide will react with ferric ions in the medium to produce iron sulfide, a black insoluble precipitate. So, does that help ?

That's not always true. As i said it depends upon the strain of bacillus subtillis. how do i explain in the report? Bacillus subtilis isn't it a type of bacteria? why does it have so many strains? so confused.. @.@
