Medal and fan Would the pH raise slightly if the pKa of acetic acid is 4.8 and you added 1 mL of 1.0 M HCl to a .1 M acetate buffer at a pH of 5.0?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

ignore what the acid is, and all the numbers. If you add acid to a buffer, the pH shouldn't change much, but will it go UP?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That can't be correct since none of the answers allow me to answer with an unchanged pH.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the pH will change, but if it's a buffer, it won't change much. It's the fact that you're adding acid to a system. Should the pH go up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It either drops or increases significantly or slightly. Sorry no, I meant down. I was thinking of an acid increase and not a pH increase. The pH would drop slightly, yes?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the pH would drop slightly, yes

OpenStudy (jfraser):

regardless of what the buffer is made of, what the acid is, or what the concentrations are: if you add acid to a buffer, the pH will go down only slightly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That makes sense, thankyou(:
