What is the percentage of water in the following compound? Sodium carbonate decahydrate, Na2CO3 • 10H2O % by mass H2O @Somy @sweetburger

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Alright let find the molecular mass of Na2CO3 and then add 10(molecular mass of water which is 18g) so we have 106g+180g = 286g if we are looking for the percentage of water in the compound we do this 180g/286g=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 62.9

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

yes very good

A compound is found to contain 50.05% sulfur and 49.95% oxygen by mass. What is the empirical formula for this compound?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SO S2O SO2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it S02

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

there is a way to mathematically do this, but if you are familiar with the periodic table you can figure the easier one without so it would be SO2 because sulfurs atomic mass is 32g and Oxygen atomic mass is 16g
