Fluorine is the most electronegative element. It's 2 atoms make a bond. Define the bond. Answer: Polar Covalent. Can someone explain me how is this Polar Covalent?

OpenStudy (somy):

what do u think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is what I am trying to figure out hehe

OpenStudy (somy):

well look Florine is a non metal right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (somy):

so it is Covalent

OpenStudy (somy):

polarity is due to electronegativity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait is not a covalent bond if there is two non metals together? or../

OpenStudy (somy):

covalent - nonmetal+ nonmetal ionic- metal + non metal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do know that if there is more electronegtivity between two elements then it is more polar

OpenStudy (somy):

yeah basically saying its polar because one of the florines at some point in time is more electronegative then the other florine thus this florine take partial charge of - and the other will take partial charge of + it keeps going like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I don't understand when it says , it's two atoms make a bond. That means 2 Fluorine together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok

OpenStudy (somy):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRwd_wJb1jc this is whats actually happening just to get actual or polarity take a look at this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@somy but if there are 2 Fluorines, shouldn't there be no polarity at all?

OpenStudy (somy):

not always that depends on how electrons are shared when the electron circles this atom more then the other, this atom will have partial negative charge and the other will have partial positive charge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You did mentioned that one Fluorine would be more electronegative than the other fluorine, how do I know when this happens?

OpenStudy (somy):

due to the fact that Florine is very electronegative, so each of the 2 atoms try to take that electron to themselves, thus at some point in time one florine takes it for itself but then the other snatches it to itself

OpenStudy (somy):

well that's all about electronegativity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooo I see your point, thanks you. And tell Tanya she is russian.

OpenStudy (somy):

lol she is not Russian i am lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are russian? I thought Tanya was russian.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And I thought you was from middle east lol

OpenStudy (somy):

nah she is not :)
