Which of the following pairs of elements could possibly be found in the same group on the periodic table? A forms a 2+ ion, B is an alkaline earth metal. A is a noble gas, B forms a 1- ion. A has 3 valence electrons, B is a halogen. A forms a 2- ion, B has the atomic number 12. I am completely lost on this one...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A 2+ ion would have to be a metal. Metals give away electrons and form positive ions. +1 through +3 would correspond with the group numbers 1 through 3. +2 would be group 2. What is another name for group 2 elements?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alkaline, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alkaline earth metals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is it, A forms a 2+ ion, B is an alkaline earth metal.

I would agree with you.
