What makes a molecule polar? Asymmetrical electron distribution around the molecule. you cannot have a polar molecular made up of the same element because those atoms will all have the same electronegativity. Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to share electrons. Its about how much electrons want to be near this element. this is decided by periodic trend, electronegativity increases across the period because there are more protons. It decreases down a group because the crowd of electrons gets bigger its starts to shield itself from the positive nuclear charge. For polarity to occur in a molecule you have to have two different elements at a minimum and the difference between the electronegativity has to be 0.5 or greater. if thats the case the outer electrons spend more time on the more electronegative element that chemist label the element polar. the result is a partially negative side on the more electronegative element and a partially positive charge on the less electronegative element.

Geometrical symmetry for example CO2 is linear its kind of symmetrical retricemetry. molecules have polar bond but the molecules themselves are not polar because the symmetry of the bond cancel out the retricemetry of the charge. In order for polarity there has to be a dipole moment a seperation of charge into a positive area and negative area. arrow with a +sign pointing towards the negative side (delta -).
