OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

Could someone help me figure this out?

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

I'm supposed to tell which element was reduced and which was oxidized but I don't know how to find that.

OpenStudy (somy):

well look at elements on reactant side and compare with product side

OpenStudy (somy):

if something is Oxidized - it Loses electron if something is Reduced it Gains electron

OpenStudy (somy):

OIL RIG Oxidation is Loss Reduction is Gain best way to remember

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

so would the Oxygen be oxidation

OpenStudy (somy):

nope Oxygen was -2 before reaction occurred and stayed as -2 after reaction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Redox

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

My brain hurts. I've been doing chem and algebra all day so now I'm really confused, I was on a role too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't get this so much series,,get some rest,, this is not that much harder,,,, :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh serious :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now your answers are right,,, @somy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@asib1214 :-)

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

I have a deadline though to reach, which gives me no time for breaks.

OpenStudy (somy):

Well you do know about oxidation states as i see + means it looses - means it gains example change from +2 to +3 -means something lost 1 more electron change from +2 to +1 - means something gained 1 electron change from -2 to -3 - means something gained 1 electron change from -2 to -1 - means something lost 1 electron

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

I feel as if Aluminium is the one that lost electron.

OpenStudy (somy):

as well as change from 0 to -1 - means gains 1 more electron change from 0 to +1 - means lost 1 electron

OpenStudy (somy):

Bingo!

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

does that mean it's oxidized?

OpenStudy (somy):

yup yup

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

and the hydrogen atom was reduced?

OpenStudy (somy):

yup yup

OpenStudy (somy):

Al changed from 0 to +3 meaning lost 3 electrons - thus Oxidized H changed from +1 to 0 meaning gained 1 more electron - thus Reduced

OpenStudy (veeveeniko):

I see, thank you very much. You were very informative and helpful.

OpenStudy (somy):

you are welcome :3

OpenStudy (aaronq):

such accuracy @Somy

OpenStudy (somy):

lmao @aaronq ❤_❤
