For any radical function, you'll have \[y=a*\sqrt{x-b} +c\] So, c modifies directly the "y" value, as you should know an square root is always \[\sqrt{k} \ge 0 \] So, as your minimum y value is -1 , c=-1 Now, b modifies the value for the zero of your square root And you have \[\sqrt{x-b} = y+1\] For y=0 \[\sqrt{x-b}=1\] According to your graphic y=0 -> x=-1 So replacing \[\sqrt{-1-b} = 1\] The only way to get a square root of 1 is \[-1-b=1\] therefore b=-2 and your function will be \[y=\sqrt{x+2} -1\]
