Pure water is neutral. What is the appropriate justification for this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

H20 *yields* H+OH− Pure water dissociates as above(slightly) to give equal concentrations of H+(acidic) and OH-(Basic). So they neutralize each other and pure water is thus neutral. This question should have been posted in Chemistry section btw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pure water has a pH of 7 and that is because it is dissociated into equal 1:1 ratio of hydrogen and hydroxide ions .pH +pOH=14 Thai is because pH=log(H+) putting 1 into 10-7 in H+ Gives u pH 7 the same goes for pOH which is equal to 7 so 7+7 gives u 14 and as we know that our universal indicator has range from 0 till 14 in which 0 till 6 shows acidic range that is because of the concentration of H+ and 8 till 14 shows alkaline range which indicates concentration of hydroxide ions so in between 7 which indicates pH of water
